Energy Healing with Sound

Did you know you can harness the power of sound to heal your body and mind? If you have a hard time believing this, think about your favorite song. You probably only have to hear the first notes of this song for you to be filled with peace and joy, energy and vitality. Now think of the sound of an ambulance or a police siren, a fire alarm, or a smoke detector. Instantly, without conscious thought, your mind is filled with thoughts of despair, danger, fear, and other negative emotions.

This is simple proof of the power of sound to drive your emotions and, in some cases, your behaviors.

It has been known since the beginning of recorded human history that sound can be used for healing and medicinal purposes. You have probably heard that relaxing, soothing music is used in penitentiaries and hospitals to calm inmates and patients. This is just one example of the healing power of sound.

How Sound Heals

If you scrape or cut your skin, you apply some type of antiseptic or antibiotic cream. This can speed up the healing process. This is similar to what happens when certain sounds, frequencies, and vibrations are used to deliver very specific health benefits.

Entrainment is at the basis of sound healing. Since you are nothing more than energy (science has proven this, that humans and all other living things are bundles of energy), and energy is constantly moving and vibrating, you can synchronize your brain waves to frequencies provided by music and sound. This moves you from a beta state where you are experiencing what is known as waking consciousness to an alpha state. The benefits of alpha brain waves are relaxation and stress-relief.

Alpha is not the only state of brainwave activity that can help heal the mind and body. Sound healing includes the attainment of theta or delta states of consciousness for meditation, sleep and healing of internal organisms and bodily processes.

How Does Sound Healing Work? What Is the Experience Like?

In a sound therapy session, you will calm yourself, usually close your eyes, and concentrate on slowing your breathing. This is to put your body and mind in a place where they are more aligned to accepting the influence of sound as a natural healer. You are making yourself a receptacle of sound. A healer will provide sound from Himalayan singing bowls, drums, songs, human voices, tuning forks, or vibrational instruments to influence your brainwave activity.

This allows you to reach the state of being that influences positive health and clears negative energy. The experience feels much like meditation, except without the quiet, usually soundless environment. The benefit is mental, physical and emotional well-being.

Energy Meridians

When you are alert and focused and you feel physically empowered, you speak of feeling energized. When you are energetic instead of lethargic, your mind, emotional state, and physical body all seem to be wide-awake and ready for action. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) this is because there is an identifiable pathway through your body where your life force energy – Qi – flows.

If you experience a lot of stress at work or you are not very active you can disrupt this healthy energy flow. Breathing impure air or living in a clutter-filled environment can also block or disrupt the healthy flow of your vital energy. This happens at specific meridian points identified by TCM. The use of acupuncture and other Chinese medicinal practices keeps your meridians – energy highways – open and flowing freely, leading to the fulfillment and overall wellness.

The 12 Energy Meridians in TCM

Different Asian energy healing methods may identify fewer or more than the 12 energy channels usually recognized by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. In many cases, TCM describes Qi energy as flowing from your chest along 3 Yin channels located inside your body near your lungs, pericardium and heart. There are 3 Yang meridians which flow to your head.

An additional, 6 meridians are located near the stomach and bladder, the spleen, the large and small intestines, and the kidney. All these energy highways connect with major parts of your physical body, like your feet, legs, and head. If you can imagine an interconnected network of highways, you can visualize how a block in one energy meridian can cause problems throughout the body.

What Are the Extraordinary Meridians?

In addition to the 12 energy channels recognized by traditional Chinese medicine, there are “extraordinary meridians”. These helps to further improve a healthy flow of life force energy by monitoring the movement of Qi through the 12 major pathways. They also improve overall well-being by boosting the health of your kidneys, influencing healthy blood flow and circulation, and improving the health of your immune system so your energy flows freely and naturally.

Western medicine is not always quick to agree with natural or alternative healing practices which have archaic origins. This is unfortunate, because the understanding that a life force energy moves through all living beings can profoundly affect your health.

We can talk about balancing your energy meridians if more traditional and accepted healing practices have not given you the results you are looking for.

How Yoga Fits into Your Energy Healing Plan

Many people practice yoga to improve fitness, but yoga is actually a form of energy healing.  By adding this to your routine you can improve your physical, mental, and spiritual health.

What is Yoga?

You’ve probably seen yoga and maybe you’ve even done it, but it can help to understand the history of it to get a better idea of what it really is.  Yoga was developed thousands of years ago as a way to heal the mind, body, and spirit.

There are many forms of yoga, but in every form the elements of breath and poses are present.  Different poses work to open chakras in the body.  Chakras are centers of energy found throughout the body.  When they become blocked, you can experience dysfunction and negativity in your life.

As a newbie to yoga, you may be a little intimidated by the flexibility of your instructor.  Don’t worry if you can’t even touch your toes.  Yoga is a practice that will help you to become more flexible, but there are tools and poses that can modify your practice in the beginning.

When you’re new to the practice it really helps to work with an instructor who can watch what you’re doing and help.  If that isn’t practical, there are many online instructional videos and you can search for one that feels right for you.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has many benefits.  It will help you to improve your flexibility and increase strength.  Some forms of yoga are also aerobic activity and help strengthen your cardiovascular system.

Many people report weight management from practicing yoga.  But one of the greatest benefits people experience is reduction in pain.  If you’re suffering from pain in your joints or muscles, a regular practice of yoga can help to reduce that pain.

Yoga is also kind to your body.  In other words, it can be practiced in a way that doesn’t harm your joints or other sensitive areas.  If you’re worried about reinjuring a part of your body, yoga can help you to get strength while protecting your safety.

Spiritually, many people find that yoga helps to bring positive energy to the mind and soul.  If you experience a lot of stress, yoga can help you to get relief.  If you’re suffering from anxiety, depression, or trauma yoga can be a way to reconnect your body and mind and get relief from that suffering.

What’s a Naturopath?

A “naturopath” is a naturopathic doctor who has been trained to combine nature and science to heal your body.  Naturopathic physicians are trained to provide diagnosis and treatment using natural methods.

To become a naturopath, a person must attend a four-year naturopathic medical school where they learn about disease prevention and how to optimize wellness.  They learn principles of nutrition, plant medicine, psychology, counseling, and homeopathic medicine.

Naturopathic doctors work in private practice as well as in hospitals and clinics.   Rather than using synthetic medications, they choose treatments that work with the body to heal itself harnessing the power of nature.

When you go to a naturopathic doctor, you’ll see that it is in some ways similar to visiting any type of doctor.  You’ll give a medical history as well as sharing symptoms you’re experiencing and health goals you would like to achieve.

Your naturopathic doctor may order blood tests or other types of clinical testing.  You may also be asked to discuss your diet and lifestyle to help create a better picture of you overall health and wellness.

Additionally, you may be asked about other aspects of your health such as emotional and mental health, family medical history, and social factors.  All of this is used to create a sense of your overall health.  Naturopaths are working to treat the whole person not just one symptom or problem.

Once you’ve discussed your health concerns, a naturopath will discuss recommendations and prescribe a regimen for you.  While naturopaths have training in pharmacology, they typically depend more on botanical medicine, nutrition, and holistic therapies than medical doctors.

Naturopaths can often perform minor procedures but don’t perform major surgeries as medical doctors do.  In the United States naturopaths are licensed in 17 states and Washington D.C.  However, they are not licensed in all states.

A naturopath can help you to achieve optimal wellness by meeting many of your health needs and using natural solutions.  Naturopathic doctors receive years of training and can provide you with general healthcare.  You may also be able to find a naturopath that utilizes energy healing techniques during their time with you to remove obstacles standing in the way of your body’s natural healing ability.

Auras

In the 1960s in the US, the hippie movement was maligned for drug use and free love thinking. Some made fun of the back-to-nature free thinkers of the day that claimed they could see the auras surrounding people. They claimed to see encompassing cocoons of cloud-like color which told them a lot about a person. While this may have been laughed at back then, it is not so abstract an idea today.

Your aura is a distinctive quality or sense of being which surrounds you. Living things are not the only entities which give off an aura. Places and things can and emit an enveloping presence that gives off a specific mood or feeling, because of living beings that were previously there. You may have found yourself in a place where a great tragedy recently occurred, and noticed an invisible presence that gave you negative, dark or unsafe feelings.

This may have been the aura that environment was displaying, and you sensed it subconsciously even if you couldn’t see it. Spiritualists and mystics who have spent their lives improving their receptivity to auras can readily identify the color or colors which surround many people, places and things. Different colors have different meanings, so let’s take a look at what the color makeup of your aura might say about you.

What Color is Your Aura?

Living things that breathe oxygen and are natural energy fields give off electromagnetic energy. If you have ever been around someone who made you feel uneasy, and you couldn’t place a finger on exactly why you felt that way, you could’ve been tapping into that person’s aura. The dark, negative energy the individual was giving off was instantly and unconsciously registered, and this triggered an emotional response on your part.

In some cases, especially due to massive trauma or some horrific life event, an aura can grow to as many as 30 or 40 or 50 feet from one side to the other. A person’s life force energy was so negatively impacted that their aura has exploded in size. There are ways you can cleanse your aura, and specific alternative healing practices (such as Body Code) can help return your life force energy flow to a balanced, positive state.

Let’s take a color by color look at different auras.

  • Red – People with mostly red in their aura are energetic, enthusiastic and adventurous, quick to act and quick to anger. If you know someone who is willing to try just about anything, that person probably has a red aura.
  • Orange – These social animals are fun to be around. They are also generous to a fault, happy, highly empathetic, good-natured, and may have a tendency to lose their cool quickly.
  • Gold – Beauty lovers and artists have gold auras. They may radiate love, joy, and compassion.  They love being the centers of attention, and cultivate a wide number and variety of friends.
  • Yellow – A yellow aura denotes logic and intelligence, as well as great communication skills. This person may be cheerful, charming, magnetic, analytical, sensible, and may become a workaholic.
  • Purple – Purple auras identify people that are inquiring and intuitive. They are explorers and knowledge-seekers, and have a tight-knit, limited group of friends they would do anything for. Purple auras indicate a love of and connectedness with animals and nature.
  • Pink – Pink auras surround giving, caring, loving folks. These romantics have natural healing powers and are highly attuned to their psychic attributes.
  • Blue – Great communicators have bluish auras, though a blue-only aura is rare. These people are influential, eloquent and charismatic, and are often celebrities or politicians.
  • Green – These creative people love what they do, in work and at play. They are usually highly respected and admired and have a connection to nature.

So that’s your introduction to auras – or your external energy field, if you will.  If you feel like your energy system is out of whack, or keeping you from feeling like yourself, get on my calendar.  We can begin to rebalance your energy system and create your new, improved ‘normal’.

Grounding – Earthing

Has anyone ever called you “grounded”? If someone says you are grounded, they are referring to you as being stable and practical. This means that no matter what life throws at you, you are capable of rebounding and letting negative experiences affect you. This type of grounding refers to the emotional or mental aspect of having a solid base or foundation.

There is another way you can be grounded, and this is rather literal. Grounding (or earthing) requires you to be physically touching the ground. Instead of being metaphysically grounded and stable, you are physically grounded to the earth. While this may seem a little odd for health benefits, there is scientific proof that being physically grounded can lead to a happier, healthier you.

A 2013 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine discussed just how important it is to connect your bare feet with Mother Earth regularly. Their research proved that “… grounding increases the surface charge on red blood cells and thereby produces blood viscosity and clumping. Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events.”

Yes, remarkably enough, connecting your bare feet or hands to the earth can positively impact your cardiovascular health. Who wouldn’t like to benefit from a lower risk of developing strokes, heart attacks and other heart-related health issues? The science that proves earthing is a simple way to positively recharge your body at a cellular level continues to grow, and the benefits seem to be widespread.

Why Earthing Works

Your body is basically a moving, walking and portable lightning rod. Physicists will tell you that everything in the world and the universe is made up of energy. This means you as well. Every cell and tissue in your body has an electrical charge. If you aren’t regularly reconnecting with the electromagnetic charge in Mother Earth, you are not recharging the “batteries” in your body that can help you fight infection, inflammation, disease and other causes of physical and mental health problems.

Your body is highly charged, just like the earth is. When you enjoy skin-to-earth grounding contact, you make a very natural connection. You are a product of nature. The earth is obviously a natural being. If you consider Planet Earth as a massive charging station for human beings, and you think how frequently you have to charge your smartphone, you paint a very simplistic but clear picture of how important it is for you to practice grounding regularly.

Look at the Monkey in the Zoo

You have no doubt heard that animals taken from the wild and placed into zoos and cages almost never enjoy the longevity that their wild counterparts do. Why is this? Animal researchers believe one reason is they are constantly placed in environments where they come into contact with concrete and chain fences and living environments. They are often fed out of a plastic bowl. These are not naturally occurring realities for animals.

The byproduct of not constantly touching fresh earth for captive animals around the world is a shorter life, and a dramatically lower quality of life. You need look no further than the sad-looking monkey in the zoo to see the importance of grounding for animals, humans included.

A Few of the Benefits of Grounding

The vast majority of visits to the doctor (often as high as 90%) are because the patient is complaining about stress, or is suffering from an inflammation-related problem. The electrical recharging that occurs when your naked flesh comes into contact with earth destroys stress and inflammation-causing microorganisms. Simultaneously, you promote the development of chemicals which fight disease and illness, while also regenerating cellular growth.

You have trillions of cells in your body. They are dying all the time. The act of growing and living as a human being means these cells need to be replenished. When the negative impact of oxidation accompanies damaged or dying cells, that electro-charged process must be neutralized. This is exactly what grounding and earthing does.

For better sleep, healthier skin and hair, improved cardiovascular processes, less inflammation and stress, and other wide-ranging benefits, kick off your shoes and go for a walk. The most benefits occur when your bare flesh contacts hard earth that is in a natural environment. Look for opportunities to make a connection between your flesh and mother earth, and your mental and physical health will both benefit.
